Located in an old schoolhouse. An art gallery features the work of local artists. The nature room has many displays such as an observation beehive, geologic history of the island, weather phenomena, and information about fish, birds and wildlife of the area. A naturalist leads hikes. Open June 13-Spetember 21. Hours 10:30-4:30, Sunday, 11:30-4:30. After Labor Day 11:00-3:00

Baseball

Sunday afternoons during the summer, the Islanders team plays mainland teams in the Door County Baseball League. The Little League, sponsored by the Lions Club, plays teams from the County on Friday evenings and have repeated themselves as league champions.

Boating & Fishing

Protected harbors offer the boaters and fishermen choices of marinas and docking facilities. Boat storage, boat ramps, boat repairs and fishing licenses are supplied by the marinas. Public boat ramps are available at the Rock Island State Dock in Jackson Harbor and Welcome Center in Detroit Harbor. 

Excellent fishing spots are located in the waters around Washington Island. Perch, smallmouth black bass, northern pike and rock bass abound. There is excellent trolling for lake trout, brown trout and chinook salmon and 30 lb. salmon are not uncommon catches. Charter fishing services whose captains know all the best fishing spots, can provide a day of fun.  Launching fee charged.

Tour an Ostrich Farm! See the world's largest egg. Visit the petting zoo area and see the baby goats, sheep, potbellied pigs, mini donkey, camel, turkeys and a new surprise animal every year. Field Wood Farm, 1/2 mile West of Main Road on West Harbor Road, offers rare registered Icelandic horses for trail rides on scenic trails. Pony rides are available. Lessons available by appointment. If you're only on the Island for the day, check in early. Weather can affect availability. Open May through mid October.

This gracious gift to the Island community features a 32' x 60' indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, well equipped exercise room, locker rooms, a meeting/game room and two outdoor tennis courts. The facility is open to the public. The recreation center is maintained and operated from annual pass and user fees and an endowment established through the Washington Island Foundation, Inc. The Foundation is a non-profit organization established to raise funds and manage the endowment fund for the operation of the Center. Daily passes and vacation passes are available.
